Fans want Eto’o Fils as Federation Boss
With the dust still settling over the final draw of the CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 which held in Yaounde August 17, fans of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions have taken to social media clamouring for Samuel Eto’o Fils to begin training for the competition, and also for him to table his candidacy to run for the presidency of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT.
The request for the highest goal scorer in the history of the tournament has been inspired by the singular performance of the one Eto’o says inspired him in the game, Albert Roger Mooh Milla who came out of retirement to lead Cameroon to Africa’s premier World Cup ¼ final appearance in 1990 where he scored four goals, and even becoming the competition’s oldest scorer four years later. Eto’o, highest scorer in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations with 18 goals last played for Cameroon when he captained the Indomitable Lions to their disgraceful World Cup campaign in Brazil in 2014 and sustaining an injury against Mexico to forfeit the rest of the way, retired from the game when he was playing in the colors of Doha-based Qatar Sports Club in 2019. During the August 17 AFCON final draw in Yaounde where he was one of the five legends invited to draw lots from the pots later hoped the Indomitable Lions would be able to manage the pressure that goes with being hosts and win the trophy for the sixth time.
The next plea from fans is for the IFFHS and CAF legend, multiple goodwill ambassador and Chad presidential technical adviser on football matters to run for the October elections in the Cameroon Football Federation where one other former Indomitable Lion, Emmanuel Maboang Kessack has already made known his intentions to challenge incumbent, Seidou Mbombo Njoya. It is known that Eto’o, who as player, recurrently challenged management of Cameroon football by the federation, has still not yet openly indicated he would run. However, a feud has sparked off between Mbombo and his Secretary General over what insiders say is the decision by the SG, Benjamin Banlock to throw in his weight behind any Eto’o candidacy for the top job at FECAFOOT. The SG is currently on suspension from federation activities for ‘insubordination’ and the communications director, Parfait Siki brought in as interim SG.
