Messi grabs South American record for national team goals
Lionel Messi took over another old record from Pele. For more than 50 years, “O Rei” held the South American record on the goals for a national team (77). On September 9, the Argentine scored a hat-trick in the World Cup qualifying match against Bolivia (3-0) and increased his tally to 79 goals.
In the world ranking, Messi now shares 5th place with Godfrey Chitalu (Zambia).
Also Lionel became the record holder of South America on goals in the World Cup qualifiers (26), beating Luis Suarez (25).
