IFFHS AFCON CAMEROON 2021 - THE FACTS
Facts and Figures of Round 1 as CAF uses rest days to effect AFCON, World Cup Draws.
In 12 days of the 33rd TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021, 36 games have been played; 6 games per group based in 6 sites, respectively. The first game was played between Cameroon and Burkina Faso at the Paul Biya All Sports Arena in Olembe on the outskirts of the capital city, Yaounde on January 9. The last two games, played simultaneously on January 20, took place in the the Ngeme Stadium, Limbe between Gambia and Tunisia, and at the Japoma Sports Stadium, Douala between Mali and Mauritania.
Nigeria had the most performing showing in the round when for the first time in the history of the Super Eagles, they won all of their matches of the first round of the AFCON, yielding a 9/9 performance quotient. That contrasts with Mauritania’s void performance all through the round.
The highest goal scorer was Cameroon captain, Vincent Aboubakar who scored 5 goals, 2 of them from the penalty spot.
2 games registered the highest number of goals, 5. Cameroon against Ethiopia, 4-1; Comoros against Ghana, 3-2. And Cameroon emerged with the highest scoring power of 7 goals out of 68 scored during the round. Guinea Bissau and Mauritania had the most blunt attacks with no goals at all to their credit.
The most porous defense was Mauritania with 7 goals conceded in 3 games; in contrast with 0 goals conceded by Senegal, and Nigeria that conceded just one goal in the round.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football has put the two rest days to proper use. This Friday, the draw for the preliminary round of the 2023 TotalEnergies AFCON to be hosted by Ivory Coast June 23 – July 23, 2023 was made in the Cameroon chief port city of Douala. The draw yielded: Eritrea vs Botswana, Sao Tomé et Principe vs Mauritius, Djibouti vs South Sudan, Seychelles vs Lesotho, Somalia vs Eswatini, Chad vs Gambia. The 6 qualified teams on home-and-away basis will join 42 others for pairings to produce 24 finalists after Home-and-away games for the TotalEnergies AFCON Ivory Coast 2023. It is historical that for the first time all 54 CAF member countries registered to take part in the next AFCON.
AFCON attendees know their opponents for final rounds of CAF Qatar 2022 World Cup
On the second rest day after Round 1 of TotalEnergies AFCON Cameroon 2021, CAF undertook the final round draw for the binary CAF Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers this Saturday. Presided over by the CAF Competitions Director, Samson Adamu and assisted by IFFHS legendary player, El Hadji Diouf of Senegal and former Togo great, Emmanuel Adebayor, the draw in Cameroon economic capital, Douala produced the following fixtures scheduled for March on a home-and-away basis, with the first team cited hosting the first legs: Egypt vs Senegal, Cameroon vs Algeria, Ghana vs Nigeria, DR Congo vs Morocco, Mali vs Tunisia.
Meanwhile, matches for the round of 16 of the TotalEnergies AFCON Cameroon 2021 start being played this Sunday, 23 January according to the following fixtures: Ngeme Omnisports Stadium, Limbe at 5 p.m. Burkina Faso vs Gabon; Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua at 8 p.m. Nigeria vs Tunisia.
