QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE QUARTER FINALS
The group stage of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2022 ended with a thrilling 2-2 draw between New Caledonia and Solomon Islands, a result that sees both teams qualify for the quarter-finals. Solomon Islands was the first to score by Almah Gogoni, who raced away from Marielle Haocas to slide home a well-taken finish and give her side the lead. New Caledonia’s don’t find a solution during 45 minutres. But in the second half, Jennifer Neporo changed the face of the game, scoring twice (73, 80) for New Caledonia. It was not enough because Mary Maefiti showed her tenacity and scored the final 2-2 in the 86th minute. New Caledonia will face Group A winners Samoa on July 23 and Solomon Islands will take on Group B runners-up Tahiti on July 24 in the quarter-finals, joining Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji and Cook Islands in the final eight. Despite being level on points, goal difference, goals scored and goals conceded, Vanuatu are eliminated by virtue of a worse fair play record than Group A’s Tonga.
Camille Andre’s stunning stoppage-time penalty save secured Tahiti a 0-0 draw with Vanuatu and ensured their place in the quarter-finals of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2022, while Vanuatu must now wait to discover their status, as Tonga advance from Group A. Today marks exactly one year until the start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ . Tahiti had chances to score by Tahia Tamarii and Vanuata by Jane Alatoa, but nothing happened before the final minute of the game when Fijian referee Torika Delai adjudged Raihei Tetauru’s push on Diana Sine to be worthy of a penalty. Vanuatu’s Liyo Eramol took the spot-kick but Andre sprawled to her right-hand side to produce a stunning save and secure Tahiti’s place in the final eight.
