Statistics on Champions’ League group stage round 1 (September 7)

*Robert Lewandowski’s hat-trick in his debut Champions League game for Barcelona (vs Viktoria Plzen 5-1) became his 6th in the competition. Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi have done more hat-tricks (8 each).

*Overall, it is 31st hat-trick in the career of RL9.

*Lewandowski became the first player to score hat-tricks in Champions League games (including European Cup era) for 3 different teams (1 for Borussia Dortmund, 4 for Bayern Munich, 1 for Barcelona).
Cristiano Ronaldo, Filippo Inzaghi and Neymar followed him with UCL hat-tricks for 2 different teams.
Considering all major European club competitions, two players more scored hat-tricks for 3 different teams: Ruud Geels (for Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV) and Samuel Eto'O (for Mallorca, Barcelona and Inter).

*Lewandowski has highest average rate of goals among all-time best scorers of Champions League – 0.83 (89 goals in 107 games). It’s more than Messi (0.80 - 125 goals in 157 games), Cristiano Ronaldo (0.75 – 141 goals in 187 games), Van Nistelrooy (0.74 - 60 goals in 81 games) etc.

*One of Lewandowski’s goal vs Plzen was a header. He equals thus Karim Benzema on number of such goals in Champions League history (18 for each). Only Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead (25 goals).

*The game Atlético Madrid vs Porto (2-1) became the second game in Champions League history with 3 goals scored in 2nd half added time.
The only precedent happened 25 years ago; it was the game Parma vs Sparta Prague (2-2) on 27 November 1997 (goals by Novotny on 1st,  Obajdin on 3rd and Chiesa on 6th added minutes).

*The goal of Antoine Griezmann (Atlético Madrid) became the latest victorious goal in Champions League history – timed by 100 minutes and 18 seconds. The previous record belonged to Luis Suárez (goal for Atlético Madrid vs Milan in 2021-22 after 96 minutes and 21 seconds).

*This goal of Griezmann became also 800th in Champions League history scored by French players. The “most scoring” country in the competition is Brazil (993 goals). Spain is the third best (759). 

*Liverpool, defeated 1-4 by Napoli, suffered 4-goal disadvantage (0-4) on the game course in Champions League/European Cup for the first time since 7 December 1966 (1-5 vs Ajax in Amsterdam).

*Giovanni Simeone (Napoli) scored at his UCL debut as well as his father Diego Simeone did at his debut game on 11 September 1996 for Atlético Madrid vs Steaua.
