WORLD CUP RECORDS (Part 4) - PLAYERS WITH MOST EDITIONS
Picture : Rafael Marquez joined in 2018 Antonio Carbajal and Lothar Matthaus on the first place of this ranking.
Players with most editions: Antonio Carbajal, Lothar Matthäus and Rafael Márquez
*The legendary Mexican goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal appeared in 1966 at his 5th World Cup and set the record which stands until now. It was only equaled by two other players: Lothar Matthäus in 1998 and Rafael Márquez in 2018.
*Gianluigi Buffon was also 5 times in the squad but played only at 4 World Cups (being included in the Italian squad for 1998 World Cup, didn’t take part there).
Actually he was closer than all other players to appear in 6 but hadn’t enough luck. He missed also 2018 World Cup because Squadra Azzurra failed the qualify for final stage (they failed again for Qatar but this time Buffon, still active, would hardly have chance to play there anyway).
*In the forthcoming tournament, the number of record co-holders will almost surely be doubled as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andrés Guardado, all with 4 editions already, are expected to play. Sergio Ramos also can join them if he comes back to Spanish national team.
