The statistics on 2022 World Cup day 3 (22 November)

*Argentina became in the game vs Saudi Arabia (1-2) the first team in World Cup history to field 4 players aged 34+ in the starting lineup (Lionel Messi, Nicolás Otamendi, Ángel Di María and Papu Gómez).

*Argentina has been caught offside 7 times in the first half, something not seen in a World Cup match since 16 June 2002 (9 offsides for Spain against the Republic of Ireland in the first halftime).

*Argentina were never caught offside within a halftime so often in a World Cup match before. Their maximum was 6 offsides, repeated 3 times: vs Uruguay (2nd half) in 1986, vs Hungary (2nd half) in 1982, vs Francia (1st half) in 1978.

*Argentina have lost a World Cup game after leading at half-time for the first time since 1930 (the final against Uruguay, 2-1 at half-time and 2-4 at end).

*Lionel Messi became the 4th player in the World Cup history to appear at 5 editions and 5th player to score at 4 editions (2006, 2014, 2018, 2022), along with Pelé, Uwe Seeler, Miroslav Klose and Cristiano Ronaldo.

*Parallel with ending his national team long undefeated series (36 games), Messi has broken his own similar run (35 consecutive games without losing for club and country) which was the longest in his career. His personal record was previously 31 games (two such streaks, one between 2015 and 2016 and another between 2017 and 2018).
His last defeat was on 9 March 2022 (1-3 for PSG vs Real Madrid in Champions League).

*In the game Mexico vs Poland (0-0), for the first time in the entire history of the World Cup, a captain of one side (Guillermo Ochoa PICTURE) has saved a penalty from the rival captain (Robert Lewandowski). Guillermo Ochoa is already present in his fifth World Cup, he added 132 international caps since 2005 (sixth on the All Time list of Mexico).

*France (4-1 vs Australia) reached 5 victories in a row in World Cups and equaled their best streak (between 1986 and 1998).

*Giroud became 9th oldest player to score a World Cup goal and 2nd oldest to score a World Cup brace. He is only behind Roger Milla who achieved for Cameroon even 2 oldest braces in the history of tournament: vs  Romania (2-1) on 14 June 1990 at 38 years 25 days and then vs Colombia (2-1) on 23 June 1990 at 38 years 33 days.

*Kylian Mbappé became 4th player in World Cup history to score at multiple editions (2018, 2022) before turning 24 years old. Other such players are Pelé (1958, 1962), Tostão (1966, 1970) and Michael Owen (1998, 2002).

*Adrien Rabiot became the first France player to both score and assist a goal on his World Cup debut since Christophe Dugarry vs South Africa in 1998.

*Theo Hernández’s coming on as a sub for the injured Lucas Hernández during the game France vs Australia became the 2nd substitution between brothers in World Cup history, after that of Sofyan Amrabat for Nordin Amrabat (Morocco, in 2018 against Iran).
