RIP JUST FONTAINE
RIP JUST FONTAINE
The World of football is in mourning and has lost one of its greatest Legends. Just Fontaine, one of our IFFHS Legends, has just died on Tuesday evening at 89 years old.
Fontaine, author of 30 goals in 21 caps with France National Team and member of the « Dream Team » of Stade de Reims between 1956 and 1962 (152 goals in 145 games), marked an entire Generation when in 1958, he sat on the queen of the competitions.
13 goals in a single WORLD CUP edition ! Will he ever be beaten ? That year in Sweden, the french striker found the net 13 times during a single World Cup.
Born in Marrakech (Morocco) in 1933, he retired in 1962 due to an injury and created the UNFP (the National Union for Professional footballers) before embarking in a coaching career. He was coach of France National team, Paris SG and Morocco’s National Team, country where he was born !
The IFFHS sends its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
RIP JUST FONTAINE.
