Statistics on Champions’ League round of 16 (March 15)
*For the first time since the season 2005-06, three Italian teams have reached the Champions League quarter-finals (Napoli, Milan, Inter).
This is a record number for Italy, taking place before also in 2002-03 and 2004-05 (always big trio Inter, Juventus, Milan).
*Napoli, with the 3-0 win over Eintracht, are the most prolific team in this edition of Champions League (25 goals).
Only three Italian teams have scored more in a single season of the competition: Juventus 30 in 2002-03, Lazio 26 in 1999-00, Inter 26 in 2002-03.
*Napoli have reached the quarterfinal stage of European Cup/Champions League for the first time of their history.
*Liverpool (2-5 and 0-1 in two legs vs Real Madrid) have lost a two-legged European tie by 4+ goals difference for the first time since 1992 (2-6 aggregate loss against Spartak Moscow in the Cup Winners' Cup) and for the first time in the European Cup/Champions League since 1966 (3-7 aggregate against Ajax in the round of 16).
*It was 6th Liverpool’s elimination from major European competitions under Jürgen Klopp: all 6 came against Spanish opponents (4th time Real Madrid, also Sevilla and Atlético Madrid once each).
*Klopp, booked in yesterday’s game, has seen 4 yellows and 1 red card in the Champions League, a figure that is only surpassed by two other coaches: Antonio Conte and Diego Simeone (5 yellows and 1 red for both).
*Real Madrid has played 300th game in Champions League: the first club to reach this figure. They are followed by Bayern (280) and Barcelona (277).
*From the last 8 official clashes between Real Madrid and Liverpool, the Spanish side won 7 and tied 1, with goal difference 17-4.
*There were 8 cases in the history of European Cup/Champions League when the two finalists from the previous season met again in a knockout round; in 7 of them defending champions advanced to the next round (like Real Madrid now, beating Liverpool again).
*Karim Benzema scored his 33rd goal in the knockout stage of the Champions League, with only Cristiano Ronaldo (67) and Lionel Messi (49) above him.
*Benzema has scored 3+ goals in 4 consecutive Champions League two-legged knockout ties (3 vs PSG, 4 vs Chelsea, 3 vs Manchester City and now also 3 vs Liverpool).
Only Cristiano Ronaldo had done it before (2 last such ties in 2016-17 and 2 first in 2017-18 campaign): 5 vs Bayern, 3 vs Atlético, 3 vs PSG, 3 vs Juventus).
*All his last 10 Champions League goals Benzema scored against English opponents (4 vs Chelsea, 3 vs Manchester City and 3 vs Liverpool).
