6th Euro cycle for Marc Pujol and Cristiano Ronaldo
In the yesterday’s qualifier vs Romania (0-2), Andorran midfielder Marc Pujol came on as a second half substitute. Thus, 39-years old Pujol performed in the 6th European Championship cycle during his career, joining Cristiano Ronaldo, who opened his 6th cycle two days earlier in the match Portugal vs Liechtenstein (4-0).
They two joined the tournament record, which is now shared by 6 players. The first to play in 6 editions of the Euro was Lothar Matthäus (from 1980 to 2000). Then Jari Litmanen, Mario Frick and Ildefons Lima repeated his achievement.
Ildefons Lima has not yet retired at 43, playing in a minor Spanish league. Theoretically, he can still be called up to the national team, for which he last played in June 2022. In this case, he has a chance to become the first player to play in 7 Euro editions.
