IFFHS CONTINENTAL NEWS - CONMEBOL
Statistics on WC 2026 qualifiers in South America (match-day 2)
*Brazil (1-0 vs Peru) have reached 36 games in a row without losing in World Cup qualifiers. This is joint-second longest series in the history of tournament, along with Germany (between 1934 and 1985).
The record from Spain (66 games between 1993 and 2021) is yet too far.
*Paraguay (0-1 vs Venezuela) are the first team in the history of the CONMEBOL qualifiers that have failed to score in 10 games in a series of 11 consecutive games. (The only game inside this streak where they managed to find the net was on 24 March 2022, 3-1 win over Ecuador).
*Salomón Rondón who scored the Venezuela’s winner in the game vs Paraguay has now 11 goals in World Cup Qualifiers, now only 1 goal away from the national record holder Juan Arango (12).
*Ecuador, with beating Uruguay 2-1, prevented them from equaling their best streak of consecutive victories in World Cup qualifiers. Prior to that, Uruguay had 5 wins in a row, one short from their longest series of 6 obtained between 1961 and 1969.
*Enner Valencia (Ecuador) has missed the last two penalties he has taken in World Cup qualifiers, against Argentina in 2022 and against Uruguay in 2023. He is the first Ecuadorian player to miss 2 consecutive penalties in the history of the qualifiers.
*Argentina, after 3-0 win vs Bolivia (without Messi), is going through their best unbeaten streak as a visitor in CONMEBOL Qualifiers (7 wins and 4 draws in 11 away games).
Their last defeat away from home was suffered just against Bolivia in 2017.
*50 years have passed since the last time when Argentina avoided conceding goals in away qualifier vs Bolivia; it happened on 9 September 1973 when Argentina won 4-0. Since then, Argentina conceded in all 7 qualifiers in Bolivia until the latest one.
*This 3-0 win became Argentina's biggest qualifying victory in any city above 1,000 meters above sea level.
*Last 3 teams that have visited Bolivia in the qualifiers have scored 10 goals combined (3 Chile, 4 Brazil and 3 Argentina). The altitude of La Paz doesn't seem so scary anymore.
