IFFHS CONTINENTAL NEWS - COPA LIBERTADORES

Picture Germán Cano (Fluminense) has scored his 5th brace in Copa Libertadores. He equaled Norberto Raffo as the Argentine with the most games scoring exactly two goals in the history of the competition.

Copa Libertadores: statistics on semifinals (28-29 September)

*Fluminense (2-2 vs Internacional) have never lost a Copa Libertadores knock-out phase match at home. Of 16 such games, they won 12 and tied 4. Among the teams still unbeaten in playoffs at home, they have biggest number of games.
The next are Independiente Santa Fe (11 wins and 3 draws in 14 games) and Independiente del Valle (8 wins and 5 draws in 13 games).

*Germán Cano has already scored 11 goals in the current Copa Libertadores edition, a figure that has been last achieved by an Argentine player in 1997 when Alberto Acosta scored 11 goals for Universidad Católica.
Only two his compatriots managed to score more in a single edition, Daniel Onega for River Plate in 1966 (17 goals) and Norberto Raffo for Racing in 1967 (14).

*Germán Cano, with his overall 14 goals for Fluminense in Copa Libertadores, is very close to tie Fred as the club’s all-time highest scorer in the tournament (15).

*Boca Juniors (0-0 vs Palmeiras) have 11 consecutive games without winning in Copa Libertadores direct elimination rounds; they equaled the tournament’s longest such series of Oriente Petrolero (from 1988 to 2006) and Nacional (from 2007 to 2013).

*Boca Juniors increased their streak of knock-out phase draws to 9 (8 of them goalless): by far the longest such series in the history of competition.
The next is Palmeiras series of 5 consecutive playoff draws from 2001 to 2005.

*Boca have tied 6 last knock-out phase home games in Copa Libertadores: another record of the tournament. Palmeiras are again the next with 4 consecutive home draws in playoff (their series is also ongoing).

*With now 6 home consecutive playoff home games without winning, Boca Juniors are now from just one game from the Copa Libertadores record in this category.
Cobreloa (1989 to 2007) and Once Caldas (2004 to 2015) have 7-game such series; both series are also ongoing.

*Boca Juniors vs Palmeiras is the most repeated semi-final tie (3 times) in the history of Copa Libertadores. The Argentine team advanced in both previous occasions, 2001 (on shoot-outs) and 2018.
