Sergio Ramos, new UCL highest scoring defender

Sergio Ramos became the sole record holder of the Champions League in his probably last game in the competition.
On 12 December, the 37-year old Spaniard has netted for Sevilla in the game vs Lens (1-2).
It was his 17th goal in UCL which made him the new highest scoring defender of the tournament.
Ramos beat Roberto Carlos and Gerard Piqué who shared the old record with 16 goals. 
We publish, for the first time, the all-time ranking for highest scoring defenders of Champions League including European Cup era (1955-1992).
The qualifications rounds are not considered.
The role means the main position of a player throughout his career.
Some players who scored 10+ Champions League goals playing mostly a defender are not included because a half or even more goals from their UCL tally were scored when they played in the midfield (Ivan Helguera, Sinisa Mihajlovic).

Back to Ramos, his record goal was scored from Panenka-style penalty; it was his 12th such penalty in the career (and 11th successful).
Overall, he took 30 penalties and converted 28 of them; including 24 from 25 attempts in the club games (he only missed one in May 2018, playing for Real Madrid against Sevilla).
It was his 19th Champions League campaign and the first one when his team (Sevilla) were eliminated in the group stage.
