HAT TRICKS IN MAJOR TOURNAMENTS
Hat-tricks in major tournaments
*Akram Afif (Qatar) became yesterday the first player to score a hat-trick in an Asian Cup final.
This has already happened in similar competitions of three other confederations; only UEFA and CONCACAF are still waiting for their heroes.
Strictly speaking, the 1949 Copa America match Brazil - Paraguay (7-0), in which Ademir scored 3 goals, was a final in fact, but not nominally (it was a playoff in case of equality of points between two teams).
The 1996 Oceania Cup final consisted of 2 matches, and Australian Kris Trajanovski scored hat-tricks in both.
*Another Akram Afif’s achievement: he became the first player to score 3 penalty goals in the same match in any continental championship for senior teams.
But this has already happened in the World Cup qualification: Ronaldo scored a penalty hat-trick in the game Brazil vs Argentina (3-0) on 2 June 2004.
