RECORD AWAY STREAKS

Record away streaks: PSG stopped, Bayer move on

*PSG suffered on 3 May their first away defeat in Ligue 1 (vs Strasbourg 1-2) since 11 February 2023 (vs Monaco 1-3 at the Stade Louis II), ending thus a run of 39 consecutive away matches without a defeat (30 wins, 9 draws) in the top flight.
This is the new record not only for France, also for European top 5 leagues. PSG overtook the Milan’s unbeaten run of 38 away games in Serie A from 1991 to 1993.

*Next day, on 4 May, Bayer Leverkusen have equalled the Bayern’s record for the longest unbeaten away record in Bundesliga (33 games) following their 2-2 draw at Freiburg, achieved thanks to an impressive comeback (0-2 down to 82nd minute).
Ironically, it was just after this draw that Bayer conceded the last campaign’s champion title to Bayern.
The Munich club did not lose a single away Bundesliga game between April 2012 and March 2014.

*Four mentioned series are on the top places in the corresponding historical ranking for the 5 major European leagues (below in the table).
Leverkusen have only one away game left this season (against Mainz). If they manage to avoid defeat there too, they will become the first club from the top five European leagues in history to go two seasons in a row without an away defeat.

*Xabi Alonso, in charge for the entirety of the great Bayer Leverkusen's run, has set an individual record in this category for coaches (33 Bundesliga away games in a row without defeats).
While Bayern Munich’s 33-game run in 2012-14 was shared by two coaches, Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola, Xabi Alonso had other competitor: legendary Udo Lattek and his feat of 27 consecutive unbeaten away games in Germany's top flight. He achieved this streak combined at the helms of Bayern Munich (1985-87, 25 games) and then Schalke, his next job in 1992-93 (2 games).
It was Lattek who held the individual record in Bundesliga until Xabi Alonso broke it.
