Club World Cup statistics (Group stage, 17-18 June)

Flamengo vs Esperance 2-0 (Group D)

*Flamengo extended to 14 the number of their goals scored (in 5 games) in Club World Cups across all versions (including InterContinental Cup). Only one Brazilian club scored more: Santos, 18 goals (in 7 goals).

Fluminense vs Borussia Dortmund (Group F)

*Another draw in the rivalry of European and South American representants at this tournament (3rd in 3 games).

*Fluminense fielded in the starting lineup two oldest players of this tournament, a goal-keeper Fabio (44 years 260 days) and centre-back Thiago Silva (40 years 268 days) who captained the team.

River Plate vs Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 (Group E)

*River Plate extended CONMEBOL's domination in head-to-head matches against Asian clubs in the different versions of the Club World Cup. CONMEBOL teams won 10 out of 13 such matches (with 2 losses and 1 draw).

*With this result, all 6 CONMEBOL teams went unbeaten in the starting match-day (3 wins, 3 draws) in the CWC group stage.

*Gonzalo Martínez became the first player in River Plate's history to play in three Club World Cups (also 2015 and 2018).

*River’s wonderkid Franco Mastantuono became the third-youngest player (17 years 307 days) to start a CWC match (including the previous format), after Daniel Alessi (Australia, 17 years 113 days) and Stipe Ukich (New Zealand, 17 years 263 days).

*All 3 River Plate goals were headers (Facundo Colidio, Sebastián Driussi, Maximiliano Meza). “El Millonario” last scored three headed goals in a single match in February 2024, when they thrashed Vélez 5-0 (Miguel Borja scored a headed hat trick).
The last occasion with all the goals headed (at least 3) was on 27 August 2014 in Torneo Transición, when River Plate thrashed Defensa y Justicia 3-0, with two aerial nettings from Carlos Sánchez and the other from Teófilo Gutiérrez.
Two other precedents in the club’s history are more ancient:
3-2 win over Estudiantes de Río Cuarto on 18 March 1984 in the National Championship with headers from Rubén Américo Gallego, Norberto Alonso, and Alfredo de los Santos,
3-1 win over Ferro 3-1 on 2 May 1990 in the 1989-1990 Championship, with goals from Jorge Higuaín, Rubén Da Silva, and Ramón Medina Bello.

Ulsan vs Mamelodi Sundowns 0-1 (Group F)

*The first and so far only game of this tournament that underwent a (65-minute) weather delay.

*Iqraam Rayners might have become the 2nd hat-trick scorer on the tournament (after Jamal Musiala), but of his 3 goal moments in the first halftime 2 were overturned by video review.

Monterrey vs Inter 1-1 (Group E)

*Cristian Chivu failed to win his first match in charge of Inter. The last coach not to find the victory on his first competitive match as Inter’s coach was Stefano Pioli on 20 November 2016 (2-2 vs Milan in Serie A).

*Monterrey got a historic draw, ending a streak of 9 consecutive defeats by CONCACAF clubs to UEFA opponents in FIFA competitions.
Monterrey became just the 2nd CONCACAF team that have not lost against European opponents, after Necaxa who drew 1-1 vs Manchester United on 6 January 2000, and drew again 1-1 (having then won on shootout) vs Real Madrid on 14 January 2000.

*Lautaro Martínez's goal for Inter became the 8th scored by an Argentine player in this Club World Cup (of total 32), more than any other country (next are France with 6 goals and Germany with 5).

*Lautaro Martinez has already registered 9 goals in 9 matches in international club competitions with Inter Milan in 2025 (Champions League + Club World Cup), more than any other player worldwide.
