Brazil successfully defended their Women's Copa America crown by defeating Colombia 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday to claim their ninth continental title after a roller-coaster final in Quito ended 4-4. The Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium vibrated with one of the most epic matches ever seen in women’s football ! The decider at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado saw Colombia take the lead three times, only for Brazil to respond on each occasion.Brazil great Marta forced extra time with a late equaliser and IFFHS All Time World’s Best Player struck again in the 105th minute to seemingly seal victory. Marta (39) was pure Legend with a great leadership on the pitch and scoring all decisive goals plus the penalty.But a resilient Colombia found yet another equaliser to send the encounter to penalties, where Brazil's experience ultimately prevailed. They imposed 5-4 on penalties, the two goalkeepers Colombian Katherine Tapia (crowned Best GK of the Tournament) and Brazilian Lorena were brilliant ! Marta was crowned Player of the Tournament and Amanda Guttieres Best Goalscorer, ex aequo with Paraguay’s super talent (17) Claudia Martinez Ovando, 6 goals each. Colombia with a great captain Leicy Santos and an efficient Linda Caicedo (only 20) lost their 4th Copa America final, the second consecutive after 2022, but their performance was extraordinary ! Argentina took place 3 against Uruguay also on penalties (2-2, 5-4 on penalties).
