HAALAND'S PENTA TRICK

Penta-tricks in European World Cup qualifiers

Erling Haaland’s feat (picture), 5 goals against Moldova (11-1), became the 8th of this kind in the history of World Cup qualifiers in European zone, and the first in almost 50 years, since Hans Krankl’s 6 goals for Austria vs Malta in 1977.
Krankl remains the only one who managed to score more than 5 goals.

*Before this Haaland’s penta-trick, no one of Norwegian players was able to score neither 3 goals in a World Cup qualifier nor 4 goals in any game for national team in XXI century.

*In the whole Norway’s history, the best mark was just 4 goals in a game, repeated by 3 players in the last century:
Arne Brustad on 17 June 1938 vs Finland,
Harald Hennum on 13 August 1958 vs East Germany,
Pål Jacobsen on 21 August 1980 vs Finland.

*It was Haaland’s 5th hat-trick for Norway. He equalled the old national record of Jørgen Juve who also had 5. No other player of the team, except them two, achieved even 3 hat-tricks.

*The September session of World Cup qualifiers brought 3 pokers (also Thelo Aasgaard for Norway and Luis Suarez for Colombia), doubling their overall number in this campaign.
Previously, 4 goals in a game were scored by:
Almoez Ali (Qatar) vs Afghanistan (8-1) on 16 November 2023,
Mohamed Salah (Egypt) vs Djibouti (6-0) on same day,
Fábio Lima (United Arab Emirates) vs Qatar (5-0) on 19 November 2024.
