IFFHS STATISTICS AND NEWS OF THE WEEK 22
MASTERCLASS
A masterpiece from Joshua Kimmich (the goal against Dortmund - picture), a masterclass from FC Bayern München !
They showed an inexperienced Borussia Dortmund how you win a title showdown, and how you win a title. That might well be the greatest consequence from this 1-0 Bayern win, as they go seven points clear, with just six points left. The Bundesliga title race might have ended as quickly as it restarted, and had started to capture international attention. It was the first great match after the coronavirus, with an audience of more than a billion TV viewers !! Bayern keep on winning, and now look set for that eighth title in a row. While that result may not be great for German football, the game itself was a great example of the excellence that can still be evident so soon after such a long break. It was masterclass !
POLAND,DENMARK,COSTA RICA,CROATIA,ISRAEL,SERBIA ...
After 76 days of suspension due to the pandemic of coronavirus, the official matches began again in Poland. The first match was held on Tuesday in Legnica, south-west Poland, the local Miedź team faced Legia Warsaw in a quarter-final of the Polish Cup.
The matches during the period of the pandemic will be organised under a strict sanitary regime. There will be no audience at the stadium, and no “ball boys”. A total of 24 footballs will be placed around the pitch. Every player will have their own bottles with water. All people on the reserve benches, except the managers, will have to cover their faces. There will be no traditional welcoming rituals, no handshakes, no exchanging shirts after the game. At the weekend the competition in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa, the top Polish football league, will be restored. Soon after that, the matches of I Liga and II Liga, the second and the third division will return as well.
Other countries have also restarted their competitions in Denmark, Costa Rica, Croatia, Israel, Lithuania, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine. Added to Belarus, Burundi, Tajikistan, Nicaragua, Armenia, Czech Republic, Germany, South Korea, Estonia, the football rolls again in the World. More and more.
THE FIRST MAJOR COMPETITION BEGAN ALREADY ON MAY 8
The eyes of the football world were on the Jeonju World Cup Stadium in Korea on May 8, when the K-League became the first major competition to resume following the coronavirus shutdown.
Most leagues around the world were suspended or postponed as the outbreak wreaked havoc on sporting plans, although several – in Belarus, Burundi, Tajikistan and Nicaragua – ploughed on amid the pandemic.
But Korea’s top flight, which was supposed to start in February, became the first major league to get back under way when champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors kick off the defence of their title against Suwon Samsung Bluewings.
Germany’s Bundesliga followed the week later, but the K-League offered the first opportunity for months to watch a major football competition – although it will not entirely be football as we remember it.
Given the strict guidelines put in place to allow for the resumption of play, there will be no handshakes allowed, conversation between players and officials will be restricted, and coaches will have to wear face masks.
