ARREY-MBI IS 4TH CAMEROONIAN TO WIN UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TITLE.
The 17-year-old Bright Arrey-Mbi joined the Bayern Munich winning side in celebration of the 2020 UEFA Champions League title yesterday when the German outfit made it a historic sixth win of the competition as they made the difference in a 1-0 defeat of highly-rated Paris Saint Germain in Lisbon. The unused centre-back substitute in yesterday’s game joins the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Geremi Njitap, and Joel Matip as the lone Cameroonian quartet to have ever been part of the UEFA Champions League winning teams, obliging fellow countryman, Eric Choupo- Moting, and Franco-Cameroonian, Kylian Mbappe to keep their urge for the trophy for at least one more year.
Juvenile Kingsley Coman, coming in from Paris Saint Germain where he had apparently been considered not so much of an invaluable talent, provided the 59th minute enigmatic header that made the difference between two teams which each could conveniently lift the trophy. The goal came as a corrective measure for the efforts of the Paris dynamite duo, Mbappe and Neymar whose scintillating performances recurrently fell short of the requirements for goals. Aided in the suicide mission by a particularly seductive performance from Bayern keeper, Manuel Neuer, the six-time UEFA Champions League winners concluded a historic feat which saw them prevail in every game of this year’s campaign.
Featuring Cameroonians in both sides, the local football family was torn into two , but with a bigger section rooting for Paris for whom Indomitable Lions captain, Choupo-Moting scored the winner against Atalanta in stoppage time to qualify for the final. Many hoped for a repeat of history as they thronged cafés, beer palors, plazas all sporting Paris t-shirts and chanting victory songs well before the game went underway. And when it all ended, they were disappointed but found solace in the fact the juvenile defender, Bright Arrey-Mbi was part of the victorious Bayern Munich team.
