ALEX SIEWE CAF COMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

The Cameroonian has been appointed to that position of responsibility to succeed Malagasy, Nathalie Rabé whose departure in 2019 after one year in charge had left a vacancy therein. Alex who, before his appointment was CEO of the ABK Radio based in Cameroon’s economic capital, Douala, becomes the second Cameroonian to be appointed in that capacity after Junior Binyam who served under Cameroonian CAF Boss, Issa Hayatou between 2013 and 2017.

Alexandre Aimé Leupi Siewe is specialized in communications, having received training when he attended several  institutions in the discipline in France in the early half of the 2000’s before moving to the United States to read Business Administration. Professionally, he spent three years in each of the media outfits, Radio France Internationale, and Jeune Afrique before coming back to Cameroon to be employed by the national electricity distribution company, ENEO, from where he retired to become worker and shareholder in the local network, Radio ABK, and 2A Media Communications.

Since the appointment October 11th, 2020, Cameroonians have been quick to switch on the countdown to assessing their fellow countryman at work in the two major competitions to organized by CAF in Cameroon: the 2021 African Nations Championships, and the 2022 Total African Cup of Nations.

3RD SUSPENSION LOOMS FOR CAMEROON

The world football-governing body, FIFA has cautioned the Cameroon federation about its possible suspension  after learning of what it describes as political meddling in FECAFOOT affairs by the country’s sports Minister, contravening article 14 of FIFA laws.

In an October 8th, 2020 letter addressed to the President of FECAFOOT, FIFA Director for Division for Member Associations, Véron Mosengo-Omba  cited the decision by the Sports Minister to create a follow-up group to oversee the enforcement of the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, declaring the suspension of the professional league as being illegal, as political meddling in FECAFOOT affairs. For Mr. Mosengo-Omba, the Minister’s move sought to undermine the resolutions on the CAS ruling taken by the General Assembly of FECAFOOT last September 24th - 25th. The letter to FECAFOOT insists that should the follow-up group tend to give instructions to FECAFOOT rather than work in collaboration with the latter, the matter would be tabled before competent authorities at FIFA, which would proceed to the suspension of FECAFOOT from the activities of the former.

Any suspension of FECAFOOT would have far-reaching consequences, including exclusion of Cameroon from the 3rd and 4th day matches of the 2022 AFCON qualifiers scheduled for November, and withdrawal of the hosting rights of the 2021 African Championships scheduled for January 2021. Therefore, the resolutions of the follow-up group created by the sports Minister which should be known on October 17th, are highly awaited.

But if things were to degenerate, FIFA would be suspending Cameroon for the third time as it briefly did on July 4th, 2013 after the government stepped in to annul elections which voted into office, then president, Iya Mohamed and his executive bureau. The said suspension followed another on January 4th, 1999 which followed political meddling with the functioning of FECAFOOT in spite of FIFA/CAF attempt to bring order in the management of Cameroon football.
