IFFHS NEWS AND STATISTICS OF THE WEEK 48
MESSI = 800 GAMES WITH FC BARCELONA !
Last week, Lionel Messi has made his 800th appearance for the FC Barcelona against Atletico Madrid.
The Barça captain reaches this spectacular figure by adding the official games (741) and friendlies (58) since he made his debut with the first team in November 2003.
Between the first game (in Porto) and the last (against Atletico), there has been almost 17 years.
Messi, in the 800 games he has played to date with the FC Barcelona shirt, has enjoyed 561 victories, 149 draws and 90 defeats. His average of matches won is more than 70% (70.21). The percentage of defeats remains at 11.13% and that of draws at 18.64%. In other words, he has won 7 out of 10 games.
In terms of goals, Messi has struck a whopping 677. In official matches he has converted 640 and in friendlies, 37. His scoring average is 0.84 goals per game
CAF PRESIDENT BANNED
The Adjudicatory Chamber of the Independent Ethics Committee of FIFA has banned CAF President who is also FIFA Vice President Ahmad Ahmad from all football-related activity at both national and international level for five years after finding the Malagasy to have breached Articles 15, 20 and 25 of the current FIFA Code of Ethics, as well as Article 28 of the 2018 edition. The Articles breached respectively have to do with: Duty of loyalty, Offering and accepting gifts and other benefits, Abuse of position and Misappropriation of funds.
The intensive and extensive investigation into Mr. Ahmad’s behavioural pattern in the exercise of his functions as CAF boss during the period 2017 to 2019 included aspects of his management as well as the organization and financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca, his role in CAF dealings with sports equipment company, Tactical Steel, and others.
The decision which also carries a fine of CHF 200,000 was notified to Mr. Ahmad today and it becomes effective forthwith. Congolese football administrator, CAF Vice President and member of FIFA Board of Administrators has just been designated as interim CAF President ahead of elections for the top job early next year with three candidates in contention.
It would be recalled that since the Malagasy defeated long-serving Cameroonian Issa Hayatou in mandatory CAF elections at the 39th General Assembly of the body at their headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by 34 to 20 votes, the management of CAF has been riddled with a lot of controversy. Mr Ahmad was last year suspended from his functions and a FIFA-appointed General Delegate in their scribe Fatma Samoura oversaw the management of the institution which had come under the bright spotlight for the wrong reason. The arrest of Mr. Ahmad by French police in June last year in connection with activities said to be illicit did not speak well of him. Today’s ban is simply another fall deeper into the abyss for the 6th CAF President .
